Corruptistan: Returning Stolen Money to the Real Victims of Grand Corruption in Uzbekistan

  • 🎬 Video
  • ℹ️ Description
Around the world—in Kazakhstan, Equatorial Guinea, Uzbekistan, and beyond— corrupt, criminal governments perpetrate torture, forced labour, and other human rights abuses. Many people view this grand corruption as a victimless white-collar crime, and don’t realize how it is connected to daily violence and abuses, including extrajudicial killings, wrongful imprisonment, and forced disappearance.

N-Map partnered with the Uzbek-German Forum on Human Rights to tell the story of the real victims of corruption in one of the most notorious mafia-states in the world. In Uzbekistan, corrupt government officials maintain an abusive regime financed by violence, bribery and extortion.

“Corruptistan” exposes the ties between financial corruption and human rights abuse, and demands greater attention be paid to the real victims of corruption. The video also outlines a just model for returning stolen money that keeps it out of the hands of corrupt government officials and places it back into the hands of the everyday citizens to whom it belongs.

How long does the legacy of corruption go? I wonder if Uzbekistan has some fabled, righteous leader that the country could unite under. If there is an inspiration to be better or return to a better, former age, then the people of Uzbekistan may be more enthusiastic about overcoming corruption in their government.
