As a middle class, 50+ year old white woman from a very white area of the United States...thank you. I need to hear about things...see things...feel things I have not been exposed to before.

this piece by john oliver is a perfect example of one of America’s strengths: drawing on the gifts of immigrants who believe in the country they live in. and that woman at the end is MAGNIFICENT.

The world has been so depressing that John Oliver has increased his swear count drastically and looks and sounds like a disappointed dad trying to educate his child turned bully...

I answer telephones and provide customer service. I am on camera at all times, unless I'm in the restroom. Any, or all of my calls are recorded, and I have at least 2 meetings every month based on random calls my supervisor has listened to and critique them. If I hang up on a customer, or a number of customers rank my service as less than PERFECT, I can be fired.
So why am I more closely monitored than an average police officer?

Irony about police unions is that police have historically been used as union busters

I used to work in a foster care facility for troubled boys. That job was more dangerous than even half of what these officers face, and we weren't even allowed to use restraints that would *hurt* the kids, let alone kill, scare or sedate them. To manage dangerous situations, we had to use our brains and the massive body of psychological study the *world* has accrued (fully available to the police). There's nothing heroic about hiding behind a gun.

I enjoy how republicans, who are constantly talking about the government infringing on the rights of the people, were completely silent during the era of stop and frisk, which directly violated the fourth amendment preventing which protects people from unreasonable search and seizures.
