He blows my mind so much that I want to show everyone and tell them, but if you don’t play or understand guitar, they just don’t get it man! He’s literally unreal and my wife is like, “Sounds like normal guitar to me, can he play like some Ed Sheeran or something?” After that nonsense, I couldn’t sleep in the same bed with her that night. I couldn’t even look at her face without being totally disgusted. In fact, I slept outside...in my car...with all the kids. I thought about it long and hard, then realized I couldn’t be with her any longer for her lack of amazement towards Tommy’s guitar skills. I ended it up taking our helicopter (I’m a pilot) to Cuba where we now live so my wife can’t find us. It’s not bad, besides the whole dictator thing. The coffee is great! I did show a guy Tommy’s video and he was like (in Spanish obvi), “can he play the accordion?” I smacked his face. He ended up beating me up pretty badly, but I survived it. The kids didn’t even recognize me with my crooked nose and no teeth. I looked all Asian too with my eyes swollen. I could barely see. But all in all, when the kids realized it was me, we all got a pretty good laugh out of it. Tommy is the best guitarist ever. I should not be writing this and flying the helicopter right now! That was close.

Tommy, what an excellent teacher you are. Your techniques, breaking down everything into bite size pieces is what I do as a tennis coach, learning one step at a time

Ive learnt mostly on my own for 20+ years & Ive developed my own style I guess including finger picking but I am missing the base skills & theory. Now watching this Im going back to the start. Im picking it up fast but it is humbling. Hes so right - you have to learn the basic skills first & not jump ahead too fast. Thats how to learn properly & it will pay of if you keep at it. I wish I had this teaching when I began but better late than never. Lean the basics, learn the fingerstyle techniques, learn what the masters have done...& then forget them - I think Michael Hedges said that - meaning get all the foundation in your system & then let it flow into your own new music - create something new & surpass the teacher - that is the goal of every teacher & student. I wont ever be better than Tommy or Michael or Andy or Chett because I haven't devoted my life to guitar like they did but I know now I can - & I will - improve more than I ever thought - thanks Tommy! (& Michael & Andy & Chett!)

Thank you Tommy Emmanuel, sir!!! My pro music career was entirely on bass. So, those Chet Atkins triplet runs are the easy part. :) What I've been attempting for several years is to learn to finger pick my Guild Classical. I am a silver bearded old man who is very slow to learn these days.
In the last 15 minutes watching this video, you just gave me the ground work, including at least a month's worth of exercises to get me from where I am to where I so longingly want to be. I'll be watching this video over and over to follow the map you provided.
Right now I can't play like you do on Freight Train. But I'm sure I can follow the steps. Getting my fingers to sit still will take some doing. They are used to either leading the pack or at least following the thumb. :) But, what you said and how you showed the process just made sense in my mind as you went through the three steps. I can even apply this to my bass playing.
I have a beautiful Guild classical with a Fishman setup that is my pride and joy. I've tried a variety of picks of all types, sizes and weights; thumb picks, flat picks including all my beloved Dunlop Tortex and Ultex I use on bass and electric guitars, Alaska picks, sea shell, banjo picks, you name it I tried it. On the nylon strings I fair best with my own finger nails. I can get beautiful rolling arpeggios by simply fretting chords and assigning each new note to the next digit going up and back down again. So, I look forward to combining those styles...
But for now, let's get that thumb working solo. :)
Again, thank you sincerely for this eye and ear opening lesson today.

At age 56 I just bought my first ever acoustic guitar a little over a month ago. To say it can be pretty arduous with how hard it really is to learn would be an understatement. Having said that, it's guys like Tommy who make me want to continue to practice. It's the whole eyes on the prize schematic that makes it worth learning. I figure if I can live to be 400 I'll be halfway to where Tommy is now. Come on lucky 400!

Tommy is so incredibly good, that only guitarist truly know how good he is. Before i started playing the guitar, i said "he´s pretty good". 3 years of playing every day for hours later and now experiencing music from a guitarists point of view, i am speechless.
Technically, arguably (of course) the best.
