Hagia Sophia was constructed by Byzantine emperor Justinian first in 537 AD. Hagia Sophia, one of the oldest and among the most magnificent cathedrals in the world, was constructed at the heart of Byzantine capital Constantinople. In 1453, when Ottoman emperor Sultan Mehmed II conquered Constantinople, he converted Hagia Sophia into a mosque. Constantinople, later named Istanbul, along with Hagia Sophia remained the center of the Ottoman Empire for almost 500 years. The Ottoman Empire was officially dissolved in 1923. Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, founder of the modern secular republic of Turkey, converted Hagia Sophia into a museum in 1935. Turkey's President Erdogan wants to change this history.
