This is not the first time this kind of disaster happens in Brazil. 3 years ago a dam burst in Mariana and killed 19 people and destroyed an entire river. At the time, the dam was operated by Samarco, which is owned by Vale S/A. After those three years, nobody went to jail and they were only forced to pay some really cheap fines considering the huge impact this disaster caused. Later, after the tragedy in Mariana, it was discovered that many other mud dams owned by Vale were in risk of collapsing, but due to corruption, nothing was made to prevent another disaster. Sadly, because of that, this same drama took place again in 2019, this time even worse as more than 200 people are feared dead. Brazilian authorities not only are incompetent, but also extremely corrupt, so it won't be surprising if Vale goes unpunished again after this second occurrence.

This isn't a natural disaster, this is criminal negligence. And it will be unpunished... AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN. If you are brazilian, please, leave any risk area that depends on the goodwill of big companies and government inspection, otherwise you'll be the next victim.

The Buffalo Creek flood was a disaster that occurred on February 26, 1972, when the Pittston Coal Company's coal slurry impoundment dam #3, located on a hillside in Logan County,  West Virginia, burst, four days after having been declared "satisfactory" by a federal mine inspector.[1]
