I love this clip, because it displays something largely forgotten about Callas, who is known so much as the tragedienne. She was also a tremendously gifted comic actress and singer. This clip shows a performance that is so layered. She is playing the character, and also joking with the audience about her fiery reputation, even joking a bit about her technical prowess. The rapport with the audience is so warm and affectionate. A clip to treasure.

lo sono docile,
son rispettosa,
sono ubbediente,
dolce, amorosa;
mi lascio reggere,

sarò una vipera

marvelous phrasing. Even as her voice began to abandon her she still has dramatic presence and charisma by the ton!

A brilliant performance. She was happy with the results, too. Those gruppetti were more scintillating than those Harry Winston jewels.

Look and listen carefully. This is the greatest 7 minutes of Opera recorded in the History of the World. Never to be repeated. She set the bar so high that nobody can ever reach it. Nobody. RIP La Divina.

It's very odd to be a teenage arab with a very specific attraction to this aria by the graceful callas, I'm quarantined with nothing to do having a cup of tea with mint and clearing my ears with this.

The essential reference point of 20th century opera. Her ability to conceive and communicate the totality of a character that is totally, perfectly informed by the character's music is unmatched. The meaning that she invests in every single word, every single

How is it possible for a singer to not to be even a tiny bit of flat in not a single freaking note?!?!?! Her voice is 100 times better than an instrument!!! 😍😍😍😍

She is a soprano and sang in E major (the original key for mezzo and contralto) and she even did not omit the Ab3!
