Houses like toys! Awful severe winds hit Istanbul, Turkey

A powerful storm pounded Istanbul and other parts of Turkey, causing havoc in the city of 15 million people.

Gusty winds reached a speed of 130 kilometers per hour.

The winds blew away 33 roofs and uprooted more than 200 trees. Storm knocked down 52 traffic lights and road signs and damaged more than 12 cars. The gusts also knocked down a clock tower.

The Bosporus strait was closed to maritime traffic and ferry services were canceled. Fishing boats sank in the Pendik district. At least six Turkish Airlines flights were diverted to the cities of Ankara and Izmir. The strong winds also forced authorities to cancel ferry services between the coastal resorts of Bodrum and Datca.

The State Meteorological Service issued warnings against adverse weather conditions for 52 provinces.

the mixing of dry desert air, moisture from the Mediterranean sea and fast moving intense low pressure from Europe can develop cyclones similar to hurricane. This is not an unusual storm, but its intensity may be more of a rarity but not unheard of.

*It seems the damage was limited to a small area. The people shopping in the streets and driving around obviously do not have weather warnings, or radios to listen to them.*

Башня с часами сделана из гипсокартона и, вообще, много чего из лёгкого материала. Где уж тут можно устоять против этого урагана

1:20 I don’t think the clock tower was built very sturdy anyway by the looks of it.

Scary!!! But shocking footage shows people still travelling outside and why they were not warned about such a weather before and how people driving vehicles in such strong wind/storm. Safety and security is first priority than doing work risking your and others lives!!!

The awning that blows away in the first scene was obviously VERY poorly constructed, as was the "Clock Tower, " obviously, totally inadequate engineering! Much of the blame lies with the terrible construction standards
