August 10th, 2020 Cedar Rapids Derecho/120mph Winds

  • 🎬 Video
  • ℹ️ Description
This is a little long but keep watching because there is some intense footage. Sorry for all the “oh my gods” and any profanity; I was pretty shaken up. Still without power as I upload this. I had to upload from my parent’s house who have a generator.

Edit: If you do not like candid commentary, please do not click on this video. I am not a silent storm viewer and sorry (not sorry), it was pretty freaking intense. Haters kindly move along.

You did a great job of capturing this storm. You sounded chipper but I could tell you were frightened as well. When the window made that howling whistling sound I kept thinking to myself "get away" as I expected it to blow in. Then you mentioned going to the car to charge your phone. I became worried about the tree nearby falling on you. Then that branch fell behind it. Your husband seems like a good guy and concerned for you. And his motorcycle.
Hopefully no more damage happened after the video ends. If this was the worst storm you've ever been in I suggest never moving here to Florida or any states with hurricane potential. Having to listen to the howling winds outside for hours upon hours. No power. No AC in very hot and humid conditions is frightening and no fun. We have a generator for the refrigerator and a few box fans. Also the scariest thing to me is that most of our storms have happened during the night. The one positive is that we get several days to prepare to evacuate or shelter in place.
Thank you for sharing your experience.

Incredible how quickly weather can change land, isn't it? I still come back to these Derecho videos from time to time. Incredible storm. My dream storm xD although I am thankful that we haven't had a storm strong enough to destroy our forested area yet.

This wasn’t during the derecho but when I see strong winds like this I always think of this one other time when we were getting this really bad storm with straight line winds. My dad was on the phone checking in on my mom who was at work still and the grill started blowing across the deck towards the steps (our decks probably 6 or 7 feet off the ground) and my dad said to my mom “Hang on hun, I gotta go catch the grill!” 😂😂

On Dec 15 2021 in Kansas we had 90-110mph winds even without thunderstorms just winds and sun then add Tornadoes later in the day it's the most crazy windstorm I've ever seen.

NOTE FOR FUTURE REFERENCE TO EVERYONE. WHEN ELECTRICITY GOES OUT LIKE THAT WITH TREES DOWN GO TO YOUR ELECTRIC BOX IN HOUSE AND TURN EVERYTHING OFF TO HOUSE. THAT WILL STOP A POWER SURGE WHEN IT COMES BACK ON WHERE MANY HAVE HAD THEIR HOUSE CATCH ON FIRE FROM THEM AFTER POWER TURNED BACK ON...

An EF4 tornado hit central Arkansas in April of 2014. It came close to hitting my hometown.
